Abstract: The first half of the talk will explain about the special challenges associated with characterization of electrodes for solid oxide cells (SOC) with zirconia and ceria based solid electrolytes. This will include the difficulties of placing a suitable reference electrode in a three electrode set-up that is representative for technological cells. Methods for circumventing the problems will be described, including the use of analysis of differences in electrochemical impedance spectra.

The second half part will be about possible interpretations of kinetic measurements on perovskite based electrodes.  Perovskite electrodes will be used as examples of the type of rather complicated surface processes that are involved in the formation of the surface in an operating cell. At the end some questions will be given to which the answers the dft scientists may have the keys.
